CNC Conversion of South Bend SB1001 Lathe with BDTools kit and LinuxCNC Configuration

Hi everyone. When Grizzly was closing out the South Bend SB1001 (8k, 8x18) lathe as few years ago, I bought one. Recently I bought a really nice CNC conversion kit for this lathe from Billy Dirks of BDTools. Billy no longer makes the kit, because the lathe is no longer sold, but he has CNC conversion kits for other lathes. Regardless, the SB1001 conversion kit has nice ways to face the challenges of converting this small lathe. I made a video detailing the installation of the conversion kit, assembling some electronics from left over parts from other projects, and setting up LinuxCNC. I'll make another video in the near future after installing the final electronics. I've never operated a CNC lathe before so this is all pretty new to me. Best wishes, Kent

New Machine Build CNC Lathe Conversion +Retaining Manual Control (G0752/G0602), wadeodesign

Hello. I’m back with another project to share. Again, the full project is documented on my website Wade'O Design - Home with pages detailing the design & documentation including CAD models, parts/price list, electrical schematic, and program.

This lathe conversion is a bit unique as it uses dual controllers; one for CNC with Mach4 and another to drive all the original manual controls with an Arduino UNO.

Here’s a youtube video to summarize the project. First 10mins is the summary with remainder just build footage.

Hope you enjoy.
Cheers

Problem What is the Role of the Positioning Cylinder? How does it Work?

$

Positioning cylinder: Its role is positioning, not clamping fixed.

Green line: means material.
Red line:
means when the positioning cylinder rising form right angle.
Generally we will layout two positioning cylinders in the front of the machine, layout three positioning cylinders on the left side of the machine.
When the positioning cylinder rising will form a right angle. as the picture show.
After the positioning cylinder rising, it will be 10mm higher than table surface. So that, the material could close to the cylinder rising directly.

  1. The positioning the cylinder rise.
  2. Push the workpiece in the direction of the arrow.
  3. Let the workpiece’s A&B side leaning on the positioning cylinder.
  4. Open the vacuum adsorption.
  5. Drop the positioning cylinder.
  6. Start to processing.

In fact, if you want to achieve better processing efficiency, or positioning cylinder is more suitable for customers who meet the following points:
a. Sheet: the materials are rule, such as the MDF, it has right angles and it’s thickness is uniform.
b.Batch processing.

PICTURE1: the positioning cylinder not raise. PICTURE2: the positioning cylinder raise

Advantages of the positioning cylinder:

  • save the time to prevent repeat the tool sensor.
  • save the time to let the material find the right position on the table surface. when we have the positioning cylinder, we only need to let the material firmly locate the positioning cylinder.
  • The positioning cylinder has the compace structure and small size. Arranged on both sides of the table surface, do not take up valuable processing area.
  • The positioning cylinder can be rise and fall, when we finish Positioning the material, it can fall directly, and hide below the table surface.
  • And it won’t interfere with the tool and won’t hit the tool when is processing workpiece.

Hello everyone, my 900x600 bed seems to be out of Square to the gantry as cutting 2 circles and placing them on top of each other gives different shapes. Can anyone direct me to a detail method of re-aligning the gantry so that’s it’s square to the x axis

thanks in advance

New Machine Build Driver for old stepper

Hello everyone.

I'm about to finish my first low budget 3 axis CNC machine with Arduino GRBL. Everything is working, except that motors are not powerful enough :).
I'm using very old isel linear rails with steppers - got them from junkyard. Motor specs are 2,2 V and 4,6 A. I was testing it with DM542, it did turn, but it failed with heavier motor loads of course.
Which driver should I buy - there are so many on Ebay, with different prices for the same models...?
Also, is there any difference if I am using 24 or 48 power supply?

Best regards.

Need Help! An easy way to align part

Hello

Im working on a small macro progam to make it easier for operators to align the part and i can't get it to work as i want, hopefully someone out there can help out.
So lets say you have a part with some holes you need to put on a tombstone, today the operator needs to align the holes perfectly with the Y or X axis, what i want it to just find one hole calculate the angle and use G68 to rotate the program.
I did some test's where i position the tool at X25 Y-43.3 then G65 P9999 C120. and position to X43.3 Y-25. here i would think that it shouldn't have moved since the new position is the old one.

This is what i got.

O9999(FIND ANGLE FOR PART)
G90G69
(USAGE G65 P9999 C=ANGLE OF ORIGIN HOLE)
IF [#3 EQ #0] THEN [#3=0]
#101=ATAN [#5041]/[#5042]-#3 (CALCULATED ANGLE)
G68 X0.Y0. R#101 (maybe this should be G68 X-#5041 Y-#5042 R#101)

Need Help! Small Business - Need to Cut/Engrave Birch Plywood - totally lost

Hi Guys,
With such an active forum and so many enthusiasts, i'm finding it a bit overwhelming trying to find the info i needed to be honest:confused:

I've decided to make my own small boxes from Birch Plywood (around 6mm).

I could potentially be making 5-10 a day and may even receive larger orders for events - 50-100 pcs.

Boxes are small, 8 x 8 x 5 cm.

But I really don't know what machine would be suitable in terms of durability and power (to cut through the plywood)

Budget is £1,000/$1,300
Would that be enough for a reliable machine or would i need to increase my budget? What machine would you recommend?

Thank you

Need Help! POLAR COORDINATES

Hy

I have come here for asking for some help with polar coordinates.

I have a part witch i must turn. And i must use polar coodinates on secodn spindle. I have swis type lathe. I have two numbers to mil on a face of a bar. I have calcualted number 1 in excel and use one of free converters, it work fine. Then made a 8 and it was great. Then i put all this stuf in the cnc, and i broke a tool. Problem is with F parameter in every block. There is none. So spindle is behaving iradical. So i went back to the table and looked at polar velocity and polar acelaration equation. so,... Now i think that it wopud be best to find some program witch can do this for me. Becose this is a lot of calcualting in excel, ( i can do it but it take time).

My question is. How to get points on the circle of teh center with equal spacing or equal degrees ( here is the firs prorblem you will never get equal of both) or how to calculate F parameter for every move in excel or in some program cad cam or somthing.

What are you using for such programs to do this. I have seen this in esprit program once. There must be other options.

Do you have eny sugestions.

thank you for your answer ant time.

We have recently lost the parameters displayed on our Nisshinbo (MTP1000F). We have been told this may be due to the battery shot-off causing the SRAM disk to break. Any help in recovering the parameters will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mehdi
