Looking for feedback on school project. Grinding/Milling Attachment for lathe.

Attached are pictures of a tool post grinder/live tooling attachment I made to replace a pneumatic die grinder attachment (also attached). My attachment is nearly silent and has more power. I am making this for a customer as well as a school project. I am using this as a project for a product design class and we need customer feedback. If you have time please respond with some answers to the below questions. The part is blurred due to customer request.

Please note: the reason I made the tool was for rough ID grinding of smaller parts on a manual lathe. I have not tested it for milling keyways or flats but I think for small features it would do well. As you can tell I simply mated a china spindle to a holder. I have plans for more elegant designs down the road.

1. What applications do you see yourself using this tool for?
2. What spindle specs are you looking for?
a. RPM
b. Power Required
c. Collet Size
3. What materials would you be cutting?
4. How aggressive of a cut do you need to make?
5. What kind of machine would you use it with?
6. Can you think of applications other than lathes?
7. Do you currently have a similar tool?
a. How is it powered and if so, what are its specs?
8. How much would you pay for a refined version of this tool?
9. What duty cycle would be required for your application?\
10. What is your position/job at your shop?
Thanks!

Vinyl cutting techniques leaving 'tabs'

Hi,

I'm using small Chinese drag knife (tiny blade), to cut vinyl on my machine, which is mostly working great

My problem is that because of what Tweakie mentions here:

"The vinyl dragknife issue is because the cutting tip lags behind the centre of rotation"

I find that the paths I'm cutting don't quite join up, meaning that weeding involves pulling the scrap free of the 'tab' that's left behind.

I'm using Inkscape to produce my designs, then Estlcam to produce the tool paths.

Is there solution for this that means I can cut out the scrap cleanly?

Thanks

Huanyang HY04D043B advise required.

HI guys and girls.

Just after a bit of advise? So origionally we bought a HY04D023B VFD with matching 4Kw Spindle.

not realising this model was a 3PH ac220, our system, in the UK, is 3ph 400vac and kinda killed the VFD (was interesting seeing the inside of capacitors).

so a new VFD was ordered a HY04D043B rated to out 3PH 400vac and suitable for a 4KW spindle, my question is, the spindle i already have is rated to 220V, am i able to step down the output power in the new VFD to acomodate the old spindle or will i have to get a new spindle to mach the 400VAC VFD? i cannont find any information anywere about being able to do this but the unit we bought said it had a variable output.

hope that all makes sence.

regards
chris

Need Help! M41 not working on LB10

I have an older Okuma LB10, (1980's) with an OSP5000 control. I am having trouble drilling a plastic part running 750rpm using M42 in the program. The spindle boggs down and even stops when I first start running in the mornings. I decided to switch to the low range but when I substituted M41 for M42 in the program the spindle does not start up, it just oscillates back and forth instead of running in the cw direction. Anybody have any suggestions as to what Im doing wrong????

change tools on existing tool path

Hello,

Curious if there is a way to re-calculate an existing tool path by changing the tool? ...or must I continue to select the new tool and create an entirely new tool path..? Just curious if this option exists.

Thanks,
TT

Matsuura MC-500V in Home Garage

Hello,

I have the ability to buy an MC-500V. Good price, it is local, and from what i have read, they are good machines. My plan is to rebuild it and convert it over to Mach 3.

Million Dollar questions, I cannot find the power requirements for the machine. I assume that it is going to be 220V / 3 Phase which i can run a VFD from single phase to three phase, but i am worried about the amp draw?

Dose anyone have any idea what the amp draw might be?

Thanks
Michael

Need Help! Sinumerik 810M

Hallo,
my name is Tomas and i have a question about 810M.
In our workshop we have a three axis CNC milling machine from Hermle. What i like to do is a zero point shift and a zeropoint rotation of 45°. For this i program:
G58 X50 Y50 A45
When i start the simulation or the program the following error message number appears 3007. If i program the shift without rotation ( G58 X50 Y50 ) everything works fine. We have the original manuals for the machine and the control 810M. In this manual is no documentation about rotation with G58. There is only discripted how to shift with G58 or G59.
The manual we have ist SINUMERIK SYSTEM 800 edition 2.87.
I have already asked in different forums with no success.
I would be happy if someone have a answer for me.

Cheers Tomas

Need Help! Losing steps after circles

Hi

Ive got a 97 multicam 48plus that was converted to a stepper machine by someone else. It has a dedicated pc running win7 64bit, a pdmx-126 rev c and the usb smoothstepper. Runing gecko drivers each with its own 48v psu. Steppers are nema 34 long body and both x and y are rack and pinion.

Im having a strange problem when cutting small circles and then coming back to pocket the tops for screwing in 6mm inserts. The machine has great repeatability even on full length travels with both x and y moving at 750ipm

When I set up hole patters everything is great until the path for pocketing the circles gets run. The circles come out round, but after all the deep 7mm holes get pocketed, the 10mmx2mm shallow pockets are all off center. When the machine returns to 0 the mill is off by 1/16" to the x negative. To make matters worse. If i ref all home and the try to return to the 0 offset saved as a fixture, x is still off. If i shut the machine down and restart, its back to dead on.

Ive gone through and set everything up per the instructions for the USS in mach, verified gecko settings, and as of the last failed test, installed all pulleys and pinions using loctite 638 to ensure no slipping is happening and reset the pinion to rack mesh as tight as i can without causing binding.

Any suggestions if the mechanical fixes don't help? Im not sure what else it could be causing the off cuts.

Need Help! CNC Router to Plasma Add On

Hello,
I would like some guidance as to how to add on a plasma cutter to a CNC machine. A few questions:
1. What kind/brands of plasma cutter might be good options to look at? (I don't intend on cutting metal thicker than 1/2"
2.What substrate should I put on my table so that it is protected from the plasma torch?
3. What are some things I need to consider while doing this add on?
Thanks!

Need Help! Finding Tooling?

Hey everyone,

I'm relatively new to CNC machining. I've had a manual 3 axis mill since I was 10 and used it mostly for hobby stuff.

Where is the best place to find end mills with a larger cutting diameter than shank diameter? So that I can plunge into deep holes and clear the shank. The maximum shank diameter my machine will accept is 6mm. I'm also one of those guys that likes to buy 2 cheap end mills instead of 1 expensive one...

Thanks in advance!

Need Help! No A Disk Drive after changing power supply

$

Thanks for looking! The Adventure continues, After replacing the Power supply, having my communications board repaired and replacing the CRT with a LCD screen, I was excited when it all booted back up.. I was quickly disappointed when I was unable to load a program through the A Floppy drive.

When booting, it flashes across the screen A drive failure, I have tried 3 different drives, no difference, the light on the drives comes on...so assuming the power supply is doing its job...but, the light on the drives are on consistently

I did go back and take a look, the power supply plugs into the mother board with two cables, I took pictures before disassembly and that's all I see in the pictures!. .

Thoughts any one?

Also going to try to cable up between my computer and the mill, but only have a USB port on the back of the computer to work with.

Hi,
I am a computer programmer, with a BS in electronics, and an interest in all things...well in all things.

I have a HF 3 in 1 machine, and I am trying to figure out where to begin to replace the screws on a shoe-string budget, then work up a CNC conversion. Money is tight, so I'll have to do It a piece at a time, right now. Hopefully someone has some info on it. It is basically the equivalent of a Grizzly G9729 3 in 1 machine. In fact I just bought new bearings for the lathe from Grizzly.

I have been programming databases and web sites for 20+ years, but had 20 hours of drafting and CAD on some old very nice TeleVideo machines in college, around '89 of the last century. I've been slowly teaching myself machining and tooling up in the meantime. TGFYT (Thank God for You Tube!)

If you think I have any info you can use, feel free to ask.

Machine/Post/Tool Libraries Location Question

I just downloaded MADCAM demo to test and when I look in the Options the 'Machine Library', Post Processor and Tool Library directories are not pointing to any location.

A look for anything like these didn't turn up anything. I am clearly missing something simple here, but do not see it.

Can anyone point me to where I should look to get these pointing correctly?

(Or do I need to download these from somewhere?)

Appreciate the assistance/guidance!!!

Need Help! Images???

Hello,

I'm interested in doing a similar conversion for my HF 3 in 1.

Is there any way to see FlanBlade's images? I know someone mentioned copying a link, but failed to say just how he did that.

Could we get the admin to fix the links?

Failing that, is there an offsite link I can go to, to follow his build?

Thanks,

SpaceX

Hello all. Looking for a chip chute (big cone thingy) for my 1998 Haas VF-0E. It is the square flange, 8-bolt style but I could make the round flange style work. One of mine was cut off a while ago and would like a replacement. Let me know if you have one!
