Need Help! series 1 2 hp grinding speed change plate

I have 2 series 1 2hp variable speed bridgeports and both were running loud and one wouldn't adjust speed over 200 rpms without hitting the speed change plate. I tore apart the just loud one apart first cleaned it up and reassembled it. It went great. I dug into the other one and found where it was hitting and made the adjustments to fix and reassmbled. It ran great but when I adjust the speed it hits the plate still but at around 370 rpms and it now hits on the low end at around 110 rpms. When I adjust the screw in front the motor, that moves the back of the speed change plate, I can adjust one end of the speeds to get better but the other end gets worse. It basically has the same range of movement as before. Also the chain seems like it has a lot more slack than it should, not sure if that actually makes a difference. If anybody has any suggestions it would be greatly appriciated thanks.
