coupler spacing

Hi,

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I had so many hits in my search I could barely go over all the posts.

I'm in the process of designing my CNC mill frame, and I need to know whether there needs to be some spacing between the screw end and the motor shaft end inside a flexible coupler or both ends should go against each other. What would be the recommended distance if the first case applies?
