Start to planning a Bridgeport Series II R2E4 Boss 8 retrofit?

$

A friend of mine has acquired a Bridgeport Series II, R2E4 BOSS 8 mill... with a few issues (one axis won't home, another is flaky).

He's been contemplating an expensive retrofit kit ($5k+), but we've been thinking there has to be a "better" way. He's not looking to return it to it's former glory as an "industrial" machine, but to let it live out its twilight years as a hobby machine, probably run as often with a pendant controller as a "manual" mill as running programs.

We've both got some CNC experience, and machining, but we're a little light when it comes to retrofitting knowledge.

What we're looking for is some general help mapping out this project!

What we don't know is; what motor drivers are appropriate (Would Gecko G320X drives be adequate? Or should we be looking at something like the DG4S-016035 from Automation Technology?).
Would a computer running Mach4 run the operation decently? Or should we be looking at a dedicated controller? I'm in IT, so the idea of using a PC as the controller is comfortable for me - IF it'll do the job.
Would something like the myriad of CNC controllers on eBay (mostly from China) out-do the old BOSS 8?

Mostly, we're trying to set expectations, and get going on the right plan.

Why do I keep saying "We"? Well, he has a second mill, that might get retrofitted at the same time, that might end up living in MY garage!

Opinions, leads, and ideas welcome at this point.

Spindle stopped during milling YL-620 2.2kW spindle

So my spindle stopped during milling last night. It had been running for 2 hour straight.
Both the spindle and the VFD is new from China.

I couldnt feel any heat from the spindle, or abnormal smell from either the VFD or the spindle.

The VFD shows Error 4 which I understand is a normal error on these VFD's
The error shows when I press Run on the VFD panel. The error will also show if the VFD and the pindle is disconnected and I press run.

I measure 2.9ohms between all the spindle pins except for ground.

Anyone have an Idea of what I should do next?
Is the spindle probably ok?

Hi,
I have a Stepcraft-840 which is giving me trouble.
I tried to home the axes.

Y is homed ok.
After I home X, and try to run it at 50% speed to the end of the axis, just to see if it goes back and forth okay, it gets stuck in the middle.

I've triple checked every possible thing I could, including electrical wiring, bolts etc.

The attached is the diagnostics page and error.

Anyone have an idea what I could do?

Thank you!

Need Help! Reci 100watt Laser Beam is Ring Shaped

$

Hey folks.

Just received a laser cutter Reci W2 and noticed that the beam coming out of the tube (before the 1st mirror) is ring shaped. The focused beam is not ring shaped though, but I presume lens would focus the ring to a point anyway. Question is though does the unfocused ring mean the tube is faulty somehow?

Power supply is underpowered at 80watt. Could this be the cause? Also can under powered PSU cause any damage in the future to the Tube or PSU?

Amazingly the lens in the laserhead was installed upside down. Is it also possibly that lens at the end of the tube could be the wrong way around? Does this come off does anyone know? I have cleaned but not attempted to remove it.

thanks in advance for any answers

Newbie Metrics for Rigidity

$

Hello,

I've been obsessively browsing this forum and looking through all your incredible builds. There definitely is some great talent here, as well as sweet machines being made. This has brought up a question...

When designing a machine, specifically a vertical mill, what metric is used for rigidity? For example: if you want to design a mill capable of machining a specified material with a specified material removal rate, how do you go about this? Figuring horsepower required is much more straight forward, but there must be some metric used by commercial machine designers.

Thanks for any help!

Need Help! Fanuc 10TE motherboard alarm

$

Hello everyone,

I bought an old Mori Seiki SL3 H lathe witha Fanuc 10TE controller, with Fapt incorporated. The motherboard displays E on the 7 segment display. There is no communication between the console and the rest of the machine. When I power up the controller the screen brights up with a pink background color but there are no menus , no characters displayed. If you press the buttons there is no feedback. I called a Fanuc technician to diagnose and fix the machine. He came and charged me a **** load of money for a couple of hours work and said that the machine has a communication error and the fixing price will be about 10 000 euros. No way.
The Fanuc maintenance manual says that E stands for : Replace (1) Master PCB, (2) NC Software ROM, or (3) ROM board.
Check message at CRT.
No message at CRT- Clear all memory.
Wrong combination of ROM chips in system. Check option Data Sheet against S/W ROM set.
Wrong option parameters. May need extra RAM chips.
The fiber optics cable seems to work , I checked them with my camera phone and they light up at one of the 2 terminals when I power up the NC. This is valid for both ends of the cable at the motherboard and at the console.
There are no red led's that light in the electrics cabinet up when I power up the NC. Just one in the graphics card that is mounted in the console with the crt monitor. I swapped it with an identical board and the same red led lights up. The power supply next to the monitor is ok.
If I take out the PC cassette A and the ROM board from the motherboard the error changes from E to J. If I take out just one of them at the time , the error stays E. There is also and additional memory board connected next to the ROM board.

I can buy each of them online but witch one is it? The motherboard , the PC cassette , the ROM board, ??? Hope there are some experts out there to give me some advice.
Thanks to all

86 mc1 10M Drip Feed issue

$

Hello all,
I posted this in a Fadal thread dealing with DNC, but perhaps my target audience is here.

I have searched and tried everything I can think of to no avail. Hopefully someone here has seen something similar.
'86 Kitamura MC1, Fanuc 10m, old desktop running XP. Smart DNC software.
When I initially started trying to drip feed to the machine, I was getting buffer overflow alarms.
I slowed the baud rate, increased the delay, etc. and still had no luck.
I began searching the web forums and product pages for more information. DNC software companies have parameter settings
for my control posted (what works well with their SW), so I tried changing things in mine. I have only made it worse.
When I try to drip a program now,I usually get a few characters followed by PS125 ILLEGAL EXPRESSION FORMAT alarm.
I cannot even figure out what I changed to get it to this point. When I pull all the safety lines out of the top of the program it will send in perhaps
100 characters or so at once before displaying the PS125 alarm. I recorded what it received due to it erroring out so quickly. The video shows the first
maybe 15 lines of the program but all 1s and 7s are missing. I drip fed this machine years ago so I know it can do it but I have fubared the thing so badly
I'm out of ideas.
Also, I am able to transfer complete programs into the machine without issue using my current port and DNC settings/machine parameters.

If any gurus here can offer me some advice I will be most grateful.

Need Help! C code for button

$

I am trying to do c code when adding a button. I want to add three buttons one to move x to 0 one to move y to 0 and one to move z to -.75. I tried the move command but when I move to my zero position and reset the zero then the move command to zero moves the amount i zeroed out not back to the new zero position. Tried other commands and get undeclared error messages.

This should be easy i move axis to zero location with arrow buttons then press zero for all axis then after machine runs a program I want the user buttons to bring x and z back to zero. I use a .75 block to adjust z zero then move off the work piece and lower the z .75 and reset zero. I would like a button so I don't have to use the arrow buttons 12 times.

CNC milling for rotary engraving

I have to move out of laser engraving for health reasons. Ideally, it is an opportunity to expand into CNC rotary engraving. I don’t know what the state of the art is as far as machines go. Are there CNC mills that can also manage engraving plastic name badges and such? Failing that, does anyone have a handle on the latest advances in rotary engraving set ups?

X Axis; 2 ball screws, 2 steppers or belt drive from 1

$

Hi I am in the process of finalizing design of my 1st CNC Router: Z-300mm, Y-700mm, X- 900mm.

My current design has 2 stepper motors driving 2 ball screws on the X Axis, the linear rails/guides and bearings have all been ordered. All of the Extruded aluminum has been ordered as well.

Before I commit to buying the Stepper motors, drivers, and the like I am uncertain if it would be best to use 2 Stepper motors and a 4 Axis board or 1 Stepper motor driving both of the ball screws via a belt arrangement.

Does anyone have experience with either? any recommendations.

A replacement button board for SX3

$

I recently bought the LittleMachineShop spindle controller for my SX3 variant. It works fine, but I was disappointed that the LCD no longer worked and the buttons were disconnected. I designed a replacement button board with LCD control, IR tachometer, and button breakout. Its a drop-in replacement for the stock board and even uses the same cabling/connectors as the original.

There is a video of it in operation here:

And some more information on my website: LCD Control Board for SX3 Mill

I have two extra PCB's if anyone is interested in building their own. Just send me a message if you are interested. The board is full of fine-pitch SMD components and I *cannot* assemble them for you, even for a fee. You will need to pretty proficient at soldering if you want to attempt to assemble it. I also cannot spend a lot of time walking you through programming the board -- I just unfortunately don't have the time. If you think you can be self-sufficient in assembling and programming, I am very happy to ship a board anywhere in the continental US for free.

The code and board files are available on Github:

https://github.com/esoren/sx3_tach/
https://github.com/esoren/sx3_tach_lcd_board

Final note/question:

With the Little Machine Shop board the max RPM I can achieve is ~1700 compared to the 1800 rpm I was able to achieve before. I have confirmed I am getting a full 10V output from the MESA board and I have also adjusted the trimpot on the Little Machine Shop board through the full range in both directions. Has anyone else encountered or solved this?

I am also trying to decide where to mount the tach sensor. I'm leaning towards the top of the mill, but if I can find a place to mount it internally where it can "see" the rotation of the spindle that would be excellent.
