Centurion 6 CMOS battery low - repair or replace controller (or both)?

$

I have a VM17 with a Centurion 6 controller. The machine hasn't been used for a couple of months and has now come up with a CMOS battery state low message. It tells me to "run setup utility" and says press F1 to continue. When I press F1 it goes to a setup screen with various setup options but I can't get it to select anything on that screen and I can't move anything to make a selection on that screen. It has an arrow I'd expect to move with a mouse but I don't have a mouse and no button on a remote keyboard (plugged into the front panel socket) does anything (the only thing that seems to work on the remote keyboard is F1 which gets me to this screen).

Two questions::

First, how do I replace the CMOS battery? I can't find a battery on the mother board (the spot that says "Battery" is vacant) but I can find a battery on the NCB card (Lithium 3.6v) - does the battery on the NCB card provide power to the mother board or is there one somewhere but I can't find it?

Secondly, should I try to save stuff from the memory in the machine before I start trying to replace the battery? I can't get anything to work which would allow me to save stuff at the moment but if I need to do that I'll start going down that path.

I'm thinking it's time to buy an sbc, and backplane, (is the PCA-6782D-S8A1E sbc and the PCA-6108E-0C2E backpane from advantech the best option?) but I am thinking I may need to download and save stuff first. I have a copy of my parameters somewhere (I copied them a long time ago and should be able to find that floppy and I think I still have the original floppy plus I have the original printed copy in case of emergency) but I've never copied DOS or any Milltronics program etc.

I (hope I) have attached a photo of the computer box and the battery on the NCB card.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Replaced Tube after water froze, new tube won't fire?

I have an older model (2013) rebadged Bodor Mini 5030. The machine was sold to me as a 50W. CO2.

A few weeks ago the UK was hit by extreme weather conditions - 'The Beast From the East' that plummeted the country to well below 0 degrees very quickly. The water in my tube and in the chiller froze solid overnight. The tube was destroyed, I did not think the machine had been damaged in any other way.

The dimensions of the installed tube (1200 x 55mm) lead me to believe it was a 60w tube. I've obtained a new 60w tube, but on installation, and running the coolant through, it will not fire, and shows no signs of life at all.

I'm now looking at the possibility that the PSU has crapped out too. I intend to test the output at the anode and diode with a multimeter but am not entirely what voltage it is meant to be outputting.

I read a suggestion of holding a polystyrene peanut on a cotton thread by the live end to see if it is drawn toward it! Is this really a thing??

So it looks like I'm looking at a faulty tube or a bad PSU. I was hoping someone else might have some insight into the possible problem or useful diagnostics, I really need to isolate the problem so I can take the necessary actions.

Thanks for reading!

Help with choosing software

$

Hello you very helpful people,

I would love some advice for a beginner, I have purchased a CNC, 3D printers (SLA & FDM), 3D scanner and a laser cutter.

Is there a software that can allow me to design parts for CNC and 3DP, I would like to learn one main software.

My needs would be reasonably basic, I don't want yearly cloud licensing, so I think Fusion 360 is out of the equation. Budget is around $500.

Thanks.

Need Help! ProTuner Ver 1.3 communication problem with leadshine HBS1108S

Hi everybody,
I have installed version 1.3 of ProTuner for ES Series, and I am trying to connect the servo-driver HBS1108S to my laptop running on Windows 10 in order to perform some unit tests on the hybrid servo-driver.
I have error messages on trying all COM Port except one where I get a different error message, saying "Unknown Drive" and then the following window pops up "Communication fail! Please check the drive and connections".
Do you know about this error and how to fix it?
Many people reported issues with other drivers and the ProTuner software, so I suspect the software provided by Leadshine is not perfect...
I have not find any information on the internet about these hardware components and software version
thanks

New Machine Build Saturn 2 4x4 Build/Assembly

First time ever post on the Zone. Been a lurker for several years now. I previously built a plywood MDF machine loosely based on Joes 2006. It worked pretty well at first.but as time went on it got hard to keep it lined up and keep things tight. The machine ended up in storage for a couple of years and when I got it out again I saw it was just going to take to much to make it work well. So that’s how I ended up with the Saturn.
I’ve had the machine since the middle of February. Here it’s getting backed into the garage.
Used an engine hoist to pick it up and set it on the leg kit.worked very well.
I ended up with 1/4” pulleys instead of 3/8” that fit my motors, but a call to Nate and he got me the right ones, so I’ve been able to get motors mounted and cables ran and keep moving forward.

I know I’m going to have many questions for all you experienced Saturn builders as this project moves forward.
Thanks for bearing with me on this first post from a rookie.

PSG612 Z Accuracy Improvement

I don't post to forums very often, tho I do read here all the time. There is loads of good info on the Tormach forums here at cnczone and I thank you all for that. So it's time I repaid with a contribution. Excuse me if this has already been done by anyone.

I bought the PSG612, because I wanted to do precision grinding. The Z-axis downfeed is so mushy. I can move it down .0005, give it a tap on top of the column with my hand, and it goes down another .002 - .003 . Not good ! I checked backlash and the few other adjustments that are possible on this machine. Nothing changed.

Started to wonder if maybe the counter weight was making the Z column 'float' in the space of backlash. I moved Z all the way to the bottom of its travel and re-installed the bolts the lock the counter weight in the shipping position. Wow, what a difference. I can still make it move down about .0005 with a hand tap on top of the column, but I think that's acceptable. Moving Z up without the counter weight isn't that difficult.

I'm making a set of parallels, After checking them with a Starrett .0005 Last Word, I can't detect any measurable variance in height after making this one little mod.

New Machine Build DIY finished 1200 x 800 CNC router build with @#%!%

okay so I did it I build my dream CNC machine over the last year plus. It was built from 80/20 3"x3" with a moving Gantry in the Y axis and the Y axis is supported by 2 NEMA 34 motors with 850oz 2 phase, and the X axis is built with a single NEMA 34 same size motor. All are with linear rails SBR 20 and RM1605 Ball Screws and RM860a micro stepper drivers. Both Y and X axis seem to run good. Everything moves very well without motors. I just finished the build the other day and bought a license for Mach3 and started to set it up along with the system. I also have the same motor for the Z axis but is a bit stronger 980oz I think. Here is what I am up against and I am looking for some advise or help on how to jump this hurdle. My Z axis is supporting a 2.2Kw water cooled spindle and it is heavy. There is no problem lifting or moving around the space, however it was not designed the right way. I am not an engineer so I kind of used what I thought was the right dimensions, well I guess I got something wrong. I have not yet started the spindle as I am still trying to set up the table top and calibrating all axis. Right now the spindle is attached to the Z axis and like I said it seems to move up and down very smoothly, the problem is I under estimated the height from the waste board, if I lower the spindle to the "0" location "waste board level" I am a bit concerned that the spindle might not be secure enough. What I mean is where I placed the mounting plate on the X axis to carry the spindle I have to mount the spindle bracket too low on the plate for a comfortable fit. So I worry it's not right and I don't want to chance it after going this far and expense. So what I would like to do would be buy a prebuilt Z axis and replace what I thought was going to work. I have found several online but all I can find seem to fit the bill only they all seem to come preinstalled with NEMA 23 motors? I am new to this and after looking what seems like forever I can not get enough info to make me feel good enough to go with this size motor. If there was someone who might know the answer to this problem or maybe where I can get the right size Z axis without a motor.I could add another 25mm under the spoil board but then I am loosing that much travel on the Z axis and right now I only have about 150-170mm lift and because I am considering a 4th axis in the future I can't afford to loose that space. Ant help would be very much appreciated .Thanks, Pat

Rack and Pinion question

I have a rack and pinion setup, I was wanting to know if making it a double pinion design is as easy as just adding a second pinion/motor/sled to mount on for going both directions?

Here it looks like nothing special they just added another full pinion set, is that all there is to it if you have a working single pinion/rack setup?

Need Help! G76 one line FANUC 6T TAKISAWA TS15

$

I own CNC lathe TAKISAWA TS15 with FANUC SISTEM 6T on it.
I want to cut conical thread with one line G76 cycle.
My cycle works with angles 80,60,55,30,29,0 but..

Problem is that I want included angle that is between 100 and 120 degrees, but when I set A to a number which is different to angles 80, 60,55,30,29,0 then alarm 62 appears.
I have red many forums and I assumed that only this angles work with two line G76 code and on 16T series.

My question is: Is it possible to change those angles in parameters?
I will know how to change those, if it is possible.

Second question is related with parameter Q in one line G76 code(multi thread): machine does not accept 6 digit number for input(example: 180000 for 180 degrees), 4 digit number does not give the alarm, but it changes nothing in the cycle. Are you familiar with that and can you please help me with these two things?

Thank you, in advance!

MQL best fluid

$

Does anyone have any good tips on the best fluids/lubricants to use in an MQL system? I have this MQL system fitted up on my Heiz router.

I can currently cut aluminium quite nicely if a little slow, in this case I just dab some lubricant onto the work piece, someone told me to use normal water based coolant someone else said alcohol but were not specific on what type.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks

Shear hog in titanium?

Has anyone tried using the Tormach shear-hog in titanium? I've read that generally Ti machines similarly to aluminium (with much lower feeds) so I was curious if the shear hog can be used successfully, or if that's a bad idea.

Thanks in advance!

Not my handy work, but the Doosan Vertical Mill rapid traversed in X while the large slot mill wasn't clear. It dragged a vice about 10 inches. Now the tool release button flashes and the tool won't release. Visible run out on the tool. What's my next move here? How do I manually release the tool without damaging the drawbar?

"RUN FROM HERE" Z- Axis goes to Limit switch???????

$

I have been running Mach 3 for years and sometimes I need to stop during a cut process or may get a false Limit trip. So I will deal with my issue and use the "RUN FROM HERE" feature and away I go! So sometimes I have had the issue when using this feature and I hit "Cycle Start" the "Z"- Axis for reasons I do not understand will travel up to Max travel and hit the Limit switch. Can someone tell me why this is happening and how to stop this?

Thanks
