Precision Matthews PM-940M (and it begins)

I recently bought a 940M from Precision Matthews (with hardened ways), so far I am impressed. I will be converting it with the help and advice from a friend who knows far more than I.

I have been a conventional machinist type for 35-40yrs, but a hobbyist for the last 25yrs since I work outside the trade now.

Anyway, running the 940M thru the travels while cleaning the shipping grease and grime I found the travels to be different than actually advertised.......it was a pleasant surprise.

I am getting X= 33-1/4, Y 15, and Z 21-1/4, with 5.250 on the quill. Granted these are extreme numbers but X= at 32 Y at 14 and Z at 21 are safe everyday numbers, and far more than I will probably use.

I have a HF ZAY7032G that I have been using for the last 15yrs (and 2 (X) longitudinal travel nuts later) and I modified it to get 10" on the Y axis but the 17 on the Z was just to small hence the 940M purchase to convert.

Just wanted to chime in for those looking for a nice machine, you might want to check them out.

I will post a pic now and then as I go thru this if anyone is interested.

Before anyone asks, I made the base for the stand to sit on, it weighs 500lbs+ and the factory stand is about 300lbs, with the machine its about 1800lbs.

I don't like to hunch over when I work and don't do real large pieces, plus I want to use servos with possibly some fast rapids and don't want the inertia moving the machine, and the base just seemed a bit narrow.

I will be building an enclosure also.

CNC Will Not CUT Sloped Edge Modeled**

We are using a ShopBot 2-phase .5 degree/step CNC machine. The objects to be cut were originally created in Rhino. From the Rhino file, we exported STL files to set up cut settings in PartWorks.

The objects we are trying to cut are 22" x 22" x 2" foam board. The foam boards are to have a cut out in the center, either triangular or circular. The piece pictured in the first image is more circular. The edges of the cut out are modeled in Rhino to have a gradual 1/4" slope from the top to the bottom. The second image is a wireframe right side image of a a more triangular cut out. As you can see, there it is sloped. But when we cut the piece on the machine, the edges are not sloped. The bit simply goes straight down. Is there some setting we are missing? Or any other reason for why we are not seeing a slope?

Accuracy I can expect from a RF-45 or similar cnc conversion? Bang for $$ point?

I'm debating whether to go down the CNC path with my RF-45, but I don't want to invest into something that gives inaccurate results. I am aware it wont be a metal hog, but can it be similar in accuracy to a skyfire which boasts <0.02mm accuracy? Within a reasonable budget.

I have done some reading but don't know exactly what to buy. This is probably what I'm looking at:
- C7 ballscrews, though I have seen some rolled C5 at a not too extravagant price on Alibaba.
- Hiwin or similar rails (for z minimum)
- Upgraded spindle bearings + new motor
- Closed loop steppers seem like good bang for buck - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/8-5NM-Ne...oAAOSwqd1Zv4pM

Can such a configuration achieve the accuracy I'm looking for, or is the RF-45, as others say, just a poor base to start with?

Could anyone recommend good bang for buck components and give me an idea of what accuracy they can achieve? Or good threads in this direction. (I am in Aus so access to some products is limited)

Thanks.

Does anyone have / used both HSD (Italian or USA) spindle(s) and HQD (Chinese copy) spindles?

Any comment on quality, reliability, power, precision?

We're looking to cut aluminium fast - so thinking a 6Kw or 9Kw option.

Friday's - How The Heck Did They Make This Part - Episode #1

Happy Friday to all my fellow Tormach owners out there. Got an idea to post up every Friday a thread for where people can post up - "How the heck did they make this part" - get ideas - go out to the shop over the weekend and try and make it.

So I'll start this off. Looking at the part, I can figure pretty much everything out except how did the do the internal part. Mind you, that hole is only about 1/4" in diameter. I'll be very interested in what folks come up with.

HowDoTheyDoThis.jpeg

On a side note.... My Slant Pro accessories pallet arrived on Wednesday and the lathe should be here first part of next week!!!!! I'm sure my future Friday's - HTHDTMTP will be lathe related for awhile.

Later,

Need Help! High speed spindle problem in HAAS VF2

Hi guys,

I have a 2005 HAAS VF2 3 axis machine here. We bought this machine through an auction around 6 months ago. The machine runs good. Machine is rated to run at 10000rpm. The only problem is, when we put the spindle to more than 5000rpm, the machine shuts the spindle and gives the following messages.

1) 102 SERVOS OFF

2) 237 SPINDLE FOLLOWING ERROR( The error between the commanded spindle speed and the actual speed has exceeded the maximum allowable as set in Parameter 184)

Does anybody knows about this problem?

Thanks

retrofitting anton cnc lathe servo question

hello all,
i recently purchased an anton cnc lathe, a small but nicely build cnc lathe from the late eighties. i want to change the control to mach3.

i got one question regarding the main spindle motor. i am not very familiar with servos, maybe someone can help. from the spindle motor 3 cables come out, all white. is this a servo or could it be a regular 3 phase motor that could also be run with a vfd?

there is also a transducer and a rotary encoder rod 420 c 1000. here are some photos.

thanks for your help,
michael

Need Help! HEIDENHAIN 151 B PARAMETERS

Hello to all, I have recently bought an old Fehlmann Picomax 51 with Heidenhain TNC 150 b control. The batteries 3 "AA" cells were out, so the machine parameters were lost too. From the internet i found some posts with machine parameters for a simmilar machine, but when I press the yellow axes motor power button and proceed to execute the "pass-over" process to "home-out" the three axes. The machine is set to start with x - axe first and as she heads towards (minus) the limit switch, she passes thrue it and stops. On the display there are three errors - PC ERROR -05, 18, and 30. I am at a dead end here. Can anyone help me please

Hello,

I would like to build my own CNC but i am having trouble finding good instructions on how to do this.
This site https://www.buildyourcnc.com/ seems like a good start but they are outdated.

Also the sizes are all in inches and not in mm as i live in the netherlands.

Can someone point me in the good direction where to find good instructions?

Thank you!

Need Help! Random E-Stop signals

$

Hi, A few years ago I bought this set:

CNC Bauteile -- 5 Achsen Interface + 4 X Einzel-Schrittmotor-Steuerung M542H | eBay

I'm just now getting to set up a portal mill and am having odd problems with it. If I hook up limit switches I can't get Mach3 to reset to allow the steppers to move. Mach3 says "external E-Stop activated". I have checked the wiring about 50 times and replaced all cables with one shielded cable per limit switch. This goes for the e-stop as well. If I disconnect the limit switches it will work for a few seconds to a minute and then stop again. In the diagnostics screen, there is no indication that the e-stop was activated. Running G-code has no effect. Configuring Mach3 to run without e-stop and disconnecting the cable seems to extend the amount of time before it shows up again.

Normally I would guess RF-noise but I have everthing in a grounded metal housing and all cables are shielded so I don't see how that's possible.

If anyone has experience with this set or can make a suggestion what to check next I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks

Need Help! Hitachi Wj200 and 2.2kw spindle unsteady RPM

$

I have a wj200 and I have basically set the initial settings for the motor. I haven't messed with auto tune or Sensorless vector etc. Just the plain Jane settings and it's ran, for the most part, ok through a couple thousand small parts over a year period.

Last time I was running, I was probably 2 hours into it and then the spindle sounded like it was speeding up then slowing down. No faults or anything like that so I shut down as I was pretty much done for the day anyhow. My coolant temp was about 85 degrees which is normal for my setup. Maybe it was just noise I was hearing?

The spindle is a 2.2kw 24000 rpm water cooled spindle.

I have had a few runs in alum where it stalled out motor and I was doing some slot cuts with coolant but very shallow. Even my GWizard was saying I wasn't using more than half horsepower if I remember right. This is why I wanted to look into the auto tune settings etc or the Sensorless vector settings.

So...anyone have recommendations on this drive to try out some of its better features like the auto tune etc. Mach3 rpm controlled though pwm on cnc4pc c62 board.
