My Sieg X1 basket case

I figured I would start a thread on this seperate from my other build thread.

I bought a very cheap x1 cnc basket case. Looked like this.

The guy I got it from was going to use a sherline spindle on it. For some unknown reason he cut 1/3 out of the middle of the original x1 quill. So aligned, welded and turned the quill.

Got new NTN bearings and the spindle installed. Looks like it will need a spacer at the front or the back the quill is not quite long enough. The preload nut bottoms out without engaging the bearings. Also maybe a swarf guard/seal. More to follow on this.

Started to reassemble things and all the lead screw assemblies were hare to turn. Like metal on metal. Rubbing on the motor mounts and the shaft collars. Took everything back a part and did some modifications.
Bored out the stepper motor mounts and turned the shaft collars down so they ride on the bearings correctly.

Completed lead screw assemblies much better now.

And finally filled all the unused screw holes and a bit of paint. Yes I like blue and hate red.
