Stepper protection when off

I'm using the HobbyCNC 3 axis board to drive my plasma cutter. Since I know the driver probably won't like having the steppers rotated when it's off, I've been waiting for the voltages to dissipate, then disconnecting the steppers from the board at night, just in case the gantry gets bumped while putting the machine away. This can't be the answer, is it? I know most systems are set up so that they aren't going to get moved around when they are turned off. How do the Sherlines do both manual and CNC operation? Disconnect the wiring?

I have thought about getting some multi-pole switches, or better yet, some relays and power those off of the supply voltage for the motors. When power is removed, and then when the supply voltage drops low enough to not hold the relays closed, they open and then the chance of damage is gone. Is that a good solution?

I appreciate any ideas.

Dave
