Intermittent Axis Position Issue

Hi Tom,

I'm hoping you can help give us guidance to solve an intermittent issue we are experiencing with our machine. The problem started about a week ago, we operated the machine for about 2-3 weeks prior with no similar issues before this problem began.

Generally after first turning on the machine it will function normally for a few minutes and then suddenly all of the axis will start moving with violent jerks and vibrations. The issue occurs on all axis simultaneously for a varying period of time after which they start to behave normally again. An episode can last from a few seconds to a few minutes, once it passes the machine will operate normally for a random period of time (up to 10-15 minutes) and then another episode will occur. In a few rare cases the issue occurred immediately upon turning on the machine, but generally it runs for a minute or two before we see it.

There is no discernible pattern we have found that causes an episode. It can occur while jogging, cutting, executing move commands, moving in any direction along the axis, and at any location on the table.

Our setup:
2 SnapAmp with Kanalog card
4 Axis each with their own power supply
DC servo motors dirrentially encoded
Encoder cables are shielded and grounded
Dedicated 5V power supply for the kflop.

Our init.c file: http://www.filedropper.com/init (click Download This File)

We have nothing flashed to the kflop at the moment. We have tried running the kflop with 4.32, 4.33d, and 4.33j, this has no effect on the issue.

Since the issue began we have tried to eliminate the possibility of noise as the culprit by ensuring there are no ground loops, we have isolated the kflop from ground by running it off a laptop and by powering the kflop's 5V supply with UPS battery. There is still some noise on the 5V supply during normal operation of the machine that can't be avoided. Since the machine worked normally before we made efforts to reduce the noise I'm doubtful that our issue is noise related, but just in case this is what the 5VDC looks like while the axis are moving:

5VDC_zpsa57b6350.jpg Photo by David_Piccolo | Photobucket

I've managed to gather step response data during an episode,as you will see there are blips in the encoder position that cause this violent reaction.

Step Response Data:
http://www.filedropper.com/x1_2 (click Download This File)

We have tested our encoders separately by individually powering them and pushing the axis, the pulses are consistent, they do not show any variation or malformation. Since the issue occurs on all axis it seems unlikely that this is an encoder issue.

At the moment we are at a loss as to the root cause of this problem, the common denominators between all the axis are few. I would greatly appreciate any insight you can provide to point us in the right direction.

Sincerely,
David.

Ps. This is my first time using file dropper, it seems to work but if there are any issues let me know.

LazyCam Z-Optimizer (LCZO) available

Hi. I have written a little command-line utility that removes the redundant up/down Z motion for which LazyCam is somewhat famous. This can greatly reduce runtime.

LCZO basically "reads" through your gcode and removes the unnecessary Z travel.

The program is run thusly:

c:\mach3\gcode\lczo < part.tap > part_fixed.tap

(1) "lczo" is the name of the small app (stands for LazyCam Z Optimizer).
(2) "< part.tap" redirects the gcode file as input to lczo.
(3) "> part_fixed.tap" redirects the output of the program to a new file you can load in Mach3.

I will E-Mail a copy of the application to anyone that sends ANY amount of money via PayPal to cgallery <at> yahoo.com as a gift. I'm just trying to raise $75 so I can buy the "Pro" version of LazyCam. Not just for my own use but also for when I do demonstrations for school classes (telling kids we have to draw a 2.75" circle to get a 3" hole unnecessarily complicates things).

I will try to E-Mail the executable (only 8k in size because it is written in assembly) ASAP if anyone actually takes me up on this.

ModBus and MHC2 setup

Hi,
I did a lot of searches on Google about my cofiguration, but they all revealed close to nothing except one tread in this forum. The guy manage to solve his problem, but I am not able to so far...

I manage to configure the MIB 3020 machine, the JY5300-2 and MHC2. Everything is working great, except the control of the machine from the MHC2 wheel, when the controller is in PC mode with MAch3 running. The readings between the DRO on the MAch3 screen and the MHC2 are synchronized, which (I think) means the modbus communication is working.
when i jog from keyboard, both DROs (pc and pendant) update.
If in Mach3 interface I go to MPG mode with TAB button, I can work the motors with the computer keyboard, but not with the wheel on MHC2.
When I go to MPG mod CAL, I can see that numbers update when i rotate the wheel om MHC2.
It appears, that the MPG mode is disabled as fro the JOG Mode button i can only toggle between "Cont" and "Step" and the "MPG" stays off (dark).

Here is my setup:

Here is the Manual for Jy5300-2 and MHC2:

I followed the instructions, few times, but I'm obviously missing something or there is an error in the docs.
where did i screw up?

Thank you in advance!

mach3 not receiving input signals from C-10 breakout board

The machine is running fine on 3 axis but the next step is setting up limits, home, and estop.
I am using a C-10 breakout board and have it jumpered for both inputs and outputs.
I planned on using scenario 2 in the Mach manual to use the five available inputs for E-stop (10), y limits and home (11), z limit/home(12), and the slaved x axis motors for limits and home(13 and 15).
The switches work logically as NC circuits.
I'm using port1 for everything.
I set up the input pins per plan.
I get no response on the diagnostics screen when i jump/unjump the pin and the +5v connection.
I tried jogging the active hi/lo in the pin assignments screen.
No difference.
I tried switching the pull up/pull down jumper for the inputs on the C-10 - no difference

What simple/stupid thing am I missing?

Hello, I have a camfive 80w laser engraver. I use it on wooden signs. I have the exhaust setup to channel the smoke away, but now im moving to a new shop where the smoke might be a nuisance. Is there anyway to filter smoke? or at least drastically reduce it? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you!

G540 Fuse Specifications

Blew the onboard fuse in my G540. Anybody know the replacement? I looked up the PN from the Gecko website but that part is nonexistent on the Digikey website. Figure be safe and get a few.

I can find identical looking fuses on Mouser but not sure which ratings I need it for other than 7A. They have a voltage rating of 125V DC then 32VAC and 125VAC

The one I pulled from the Gecko said "10A IE" on it which leads me to believe it's a 10A fuse.

Any ideas?

Need Help! Alarm 950 Tornado 200

Hi
Changed the set of 4 D Cell batteries on the Fanuc OT-C control of the Tornado 200, and all went well, but while changing the set of 3 batteries the controller shut down, on restart I got Error 950 Fuse Break (+24E : FX14).
What have I done and does this mean a fuse has blown, and if so where is it?

Best Regards
Mark

I am having trouble creating jobs in Corel, and then getting them converted to use on the Charlie. Does anyone out there have any ideas, or how i can get support on learning this process. Thanks.

Help finding a Spindle for Wood, Plastic, and maybe Aluminium?

$

Hello all,

I have finished my first CNC and had a couple questions about spindles. I am currently using a Dewalt DW660 (30K RPM) to cut wood and some plastic. It seems to work just fine, except there are a couple things I would like to improve and I suspect it may be a good idea to try another cutting tool. I have seen all kinds of spindles on Ebay or various sites but I am not sure if they are overkill for what I am looking to do. Would anyone mind weighing in with their experienced opinion?

Requirements/Questions:
1. Primarily used to cut wood and plastic.
2. Cutting Aluminium would be a nice benefit, but not essential
3. Collet size of ~<=1/8" at minimum. Some traditional wood routers have collets of 1/4", this is OK, but I need the ability to cut with smaller endmills. Do they make small endmills with such a large shaft?
4. Variable speed. I have a few endmills that have become dark after use. I assume it is getting too hot probably from spinning it at such a fast rpm.
5. Is it possible to get a quieter spindle? Routers are pretty loud, any chance a better spindle is more quiet?
6. Should I be looking at something that needs a VFD or water cooling?

Thanks!

I have learned a lot but am trying to figure out how to determine the settings for the tool paths. at first i will mostely just be cutting pretty simple shapes into 3/4" and 1/2" MDF but plan on getting into other materials as well. Can someone point me in a direction for some support. Any help on this is greatly appreciated.
