What do I need to laser engrave aluminum?

$

I make parts out of plastic & aluminum. I would like to be able to mark my parts with company name patent numbers etc. I see some Chinese fiber lasers on ebay I am not wanting to spend a lot but if these are not good I would just as soon skip the idea. I have a CNC router but it sure is slow engraving that way. I tried searching to get these answers and couldn't find what I was looking for.

Thanks Mike

CALIBRATION ISSUES

$

Hi there!

I am using a CNC 3020T with your USB CNC Controller software and I am having problems with the calibration process.
I have used the "axis SPU calibration" in File>>settings>>Axes. I am able to calibrate the distance on a displacement of 100mm on positive X direction after some iterations. However, after that, if I command it to move the same 100mm in the negative X, it travels way farther (around 145mm) and I ignore why.
First I thought it could have to do with a mechanical issue on the machine, but I reversed the direction of the axis so that a command to move in the positive would move in what previously was negative direction. then I calibrated in the positive direction just as before (but now physically moving in the opposite sense), and when I commanded it to move 100mm in the negative it still moved longer than it should.

The same occurs with the Y axis.
I tried the traversing at different speeds at it didn't solve it either.

I would appreciate if anyone could help me understand why the SPU seem to change depending on the direction of movement within the same axis, and how I could solve this problem. I have the feeling I am missing on something related to the settings of the device.

Thanks.

Find business partners on Mato Grosso Promotion Conference?

I have recently heard that Mato Grosso Promotion Conference would be held on November, 8 , in China. Some enterprises from Mato Grosso, Brazil and Chinese institutions and companies will attend the conference. The enterprises from Brazil mainly aim to look for suppliers or investors. Some of the companies belong to machinery industry.

I got this news from JumoreGlobal, a B2B cross-border e-commerce platform in China. JumoreGlobal will organize or attend activities offline to help its members find business opportunities. This promotion conference is the first activity that I have heard from the platform. The business specialist of the platform will help members find cooperation opportunities. I think it may be a good chance to access to business partners. What do you think of that?

WATER PUMP SPECS?

I need to replace a water pump (for a 2kw spindle) and I don't know what to buy.

Does anyone know how BIG (GPM) of a pump I need?

It is for a Chinese router and I don't read Chinese, if the specs are even there.

Newbie Aluminium 2024 T351 bowing when machining 'open pockets'

Hi all,

i am a relatively new CNC milling programmer, 22 years of age and i have kind of been thrown in at the deep end with minimal practical experience, i have studied the theory and worked on our CAD/CAM system extensively, but practical experience is something i lack. my boss has given me the task of machining some trial parts, the first of which i did yesterday. the part is clamped to a fixture plate. my part was dimensionally perfect until i loosened my clamps and found my material had 'bowed' at either end by roughly 8mm. the part is 2200mm x 240mm x 35mm, the finish thickness is 2200mm x 240mm x 32mm. i skimmed the top with a 160mm facemill and skimmed an equal amount from the bottom, roughly 1.5mm off each side to get my material flat and down to the correct thickness. there are then two 'open pockets'/ slots that are 2200mm x 60mm x 21mm deep that leave the part in almost a 'T' shape. the way i went about milling these slots was to use a 25mm 6 flute endmill with 5mm depth of cut and 15mm width of cut. leaving 0.25mm on all faces to finish with a 20mm endmill.

like i said, the part was dimensionally perfect.. what is the reason that my part has warped when i have released the clamps? is there any way that i can avoid this happening without sending the material off to be de-stressed/annealed?

i lack experience in all honesty and this part has a flatness tolerance of 0.1mm that i dont know how to achieve. if anyone on here with more experience than myself could offer me a direction to go that would be fantastic.

Fixing head nod - NM200

Hi All

I have been asked to assist a UK University in getting their NM-200 up and running properly.

We will be working through the electronics at some point as they wanted to install a SmoothStepper and that is giving them some grief.

The more important question for me though is the head nod.

I have trammed the head in the X direction fine. But the Y is low on the front of the machine.

Use a dial test indicator as well as my trust Edge Tech. trammer.

The Z axis is spot on perpendicular to the bed as I use a granite square to see if the column was out.

The only way I can think of fixing this is by shimming between the swivel plate and the box that the linear carriages screw in to.

Any other ideas?

If this is the only way, how do I pull the head away enough to sneak the shim between the parts?

Thanks in advance guys.

Newbie CNC Lathe question

$

I am self taught and have been using a HAAS mill for several years. I just recently purchased a HAAS lathe to widen our capabilities and make some things we do on the mill more efficient.

My question is, what type of cutoff tool/insert would be best suited for parting off 304 stainless steel tubing, more precisely hypodermic needle tubing. The only thing I am certain of so far is that it will need to be cut pretty close to the spindle to keep it from flexing. But I could really use some advice on the best method and tool to use to accomplish this best.

Thanks in advance

Keith

Need Help! Useing 2 roughing tools on lathe V28

I have a lathe part where I want to rough out with 2 different tools. So I do my first pass with a 80 deg diamond tool no problem, but then I do a second roughing pass and it won't allow me to select a different tool number for the 35 deg diamond I want to use. When I get to the tool screen the tool number is greyed out, and I can't change it to a different tool number. Anyone know who to rough with 2 different tools?

Hello,

I am about to start assembly of my first CNC router and would like some pointers to whether or not I am heading in the right direction here.
Bought a Mitsubishi FR-D720S 1,5kW VFD w matching EMI filter. The spindle is 800W.

Right now Im most worried about wiring the VFD. Seems to be a common source of confusion atleast. :tired:
Those worries came after reading the VFD manual, leading me to doubt my initial plan. Cant help but think the recommended circuit breakers and peripheral devices are a bit overkill for my purpose? But im certainly no electrician.
It states I need a NF32 xx 3P 32A MCCB without a reactor. NF32 xx 16A with a reactor. Aswell as a S-N10 MC, regardless of using a reactor or not.

Im considering leaving out the MCCB, MC and reactor as I planned initially. Going directly from the 16A mains CB <-> wall outlet <-> 8A (125+%) CB <-> power switch <-> EMI filter <-> VFD .
Not sure about the 8A fuse, considering potential inrush but the VFD has an inrush limiting circuit for what its worth.

One part of me says its all going to trip and everything will catch fire, the other part says it will be fine.:p

Build Thread Bull's CNC Router

Howdy CNC people,

Long time lurker, first time poster. A couple of years ago, I designed and built a CNC machine. During that process, I used this forum extensively for design ideas, troubleshooting, and general sanity checks. I finally got around to putting together documentation of my build, so I thought I’d post it here to help out some other people.

Here is a link to my website with a full description of the build including a CAD model and bill of materials.

TLDR:

  • ~2ft x ~4ft x ~5 in build area
  • Xylotex drivers
  • Rollerchain x and y axis with CNCrouterparts bearing trucks
  • Pre-built z axis
  • Aluminum Gantry, Wood Table
  • ~$1500 budget including all major components

She won’t win any beauty contests, but she does what I need her to do.
