I think I have made some progress using Bobart for embossing. I just need to figure out how to get a little more body in it.

I've been beta testing Centroid's new step and direction 4 axis motion controller and software.
It's currently at $265 for the hardware and software from the same manufacturer. It has a true spindle encoder port. Ethernet based.
I'm hoping to build a CNC router/plasma cutter table (if that's possible?) and plan on using Acorn.
I've got 2 benchtop mills running on Acorn and an Emcoturn 120 lathe. Router build is planned.
It also has a DB25 port pin compatible with the Gecko G540. All 3 of my machines are currently running on G540's plugged into Acorn.
More info on Acorn can be found here:
Acorn CNC controller, Step and Direction 4 axis CNC Control board with ethernet communication.
You can visit and ask questions on their user forums:

Industrial class motion Controller hardware and software from the same company now available to the step and direction market. Centroid has been doing it for over 30 years.

Hello,
I'm hoping I can get a basic or even better a detailed explanation of how Lost Foam Ceramic coated metal casting is done. The reason is my son is a last year at NorthEastern (Mechanical Engineer major) and has a elective class for welding and metal casting. His instructor wants them to do a "Multiples" casing of the same part. So the plan is to make a number of Positive masters from Foam and coat with ceramic for casting. The item is going to be a somewhat fancy shelve bracket. Since I have the CNC machine at my shop we are doing the machining of the masters . So allow me to kick this off with all the NooB questions. The better I understand the entire process I feel the better the foam master will come out: Rest assured I will NOT be doing the casting but will be done at the Mass Art Institute shop under proper supervision.
1- What foam is normally used for this process. I was thinking Dow Hi-Load 100 or even 40. What about Core-cell?
2- Are the foam masters machined with included pour tubes and vent tubes?
3- How are the foam masters coated with Ceramic? What is the process? Dipped multi times, Brush on? Sprayed on?
4- How are the coated masters supported for the pour process. Some kind of stand, jig? Master machined in one large unit for a large single pour?
5- How is the foam removed once coated. Baked out with oven? Pour in acetone and melt? Let the hot liquid metal blow it out? Just curious.
6- How is the ceramic removed after pour and cooled. Just beat it off with a hammer?
I'm sure I have missed a lot but look forward to learn how this is done.
Thanks

i need to put 10 holes on the face. I pilot drill them thru with a .6875 drill, but then
I need to interpolate a counter bore on a 24" B.C at 1.66 inch deep and 1.437 dia. Can use a .500 -.625 end mill. I know I need to use the G12.1. I have a Doosan PUMA 700. I have no Y axis. Just X, Z, C. Looking for an example of helical milling program on this.
Thanks

I'm looking for someone to machine an 18' boat hull plug out of foam or lower cost materials such as MDF. Renboard is a possibility if it can be sourced at a reasonable cost. Plug can be machined in sections and final assembly done by me locally.
I have a drawing available, full CAD file is available but under NDA.

What is the reason, that I don't seem to find a lot (actually none) designs/builds that try to scale down those large portal mills to shop format?
IMHO the design should be sturdier than a gantry design (moving weight can go into rigidity of essential parts) and the rails/drives are higher up and away from chips.
What am I missing?

Hi there.
what is the general rule for Feed Rate setting for wood?
Should the Feed Rate for x,y axis faster that z axis? or they should be the same?
I think I' m not doing it right sychronizing the Feed Rate for z and x,xy axis in cutting woods and mdf.
I observe the router like being "choke" and unsual noise can be heard like cranking then x axis change its origin!
is this Feed Rate problem ?

This site has always performed perfectly but now it's a challenge to get it to open. It will take almost 30 seconds to access and open. Opening pictures in threads takes the same amount of time. I have done nothing new on this end. I have tried it with Ad-Block enabled and disabled..not difference. I have scanned my computer, booted my computer and pulled my hair out. Don't know what else to do. All other sites perform perfectly. The Zone started acting up about 2 weeks ago and hasn't changed. Stuart

I will be accepting a daytime job in downtown Bellevue and I am looking for a place to rent. At minimum I need a room and kitchen access. I will be on my own, but my wife will be out to visit frequently.
The ideal place would include a small area for me to do woodworking in. I do various kinds of metalwork (including blacksmithing) and woodwork as hobbies.
I am easy to get along with and quiet, respectful of other's property. I'm also pretty helpful and I cook.
I'll be arriving mid November, but the room doesn't have to be available immediately.
Please let me know if you know of anyone interested in renting a room.

How is the benefit paying off for you?
What scenarios work better then others?
Any tips?

I recently
purchased 4 large bull nose router bits for woodworking.
I ordered
a kind that has a carbide coating. Now I have received these router bits, but upon inspection they look to have normal metal cutting edges. How can I tell if they actually have a carbide coating?
See attached pictures:

I recently purchased a used 2004 Deckel Maho 64V Linear, the batteries were dead when it arrived. I replaced them and got the drive reset but can not get the spindle to turn on or initialize. The only way it will turn is if I issue an M19 spindle orient command. I have a lot of experience with Fanuc but I am a newbie when it comes to Deckel Maho and the DMG Iconline interface any help would be appreciated......

hi other surfcam users
I have an issue that all of you have faced lately, multiple stock shown when you have assembly files. I have asked surfcam for help but no one has replied. does anyone out there know if there is a switch to not allow multiple stocks to show up every time you create a new stock for machining or is it a bug like it seems.

I'm in need of a 6.25 x 10 mm coupler that's at least 40mm long. Was wondering if I could just turn one myself. I know I can get the bores within a thou or so of being concentric with each other. Do any of you know a flex option that I could get in a reasonable amount of time? Need to finish a project soon and don't really want to wait weeks for one from China.
