I figure its about time to start posting some of my build here. It's been a long slow venture. I lurked here for a couple years and before that I read about home CNC router building at other places on the web. This WILL seem very unconventional to most. And it is. I started my ideas, designing, and purchasing of components before CNCRP had those nice linear trucks, before the Gecko G540, before I ever heard of buying ball screws from Chai. I haven't modeled my build with any 3D CAD or sketchup. I have not used them but would like to learn some time. Everything has been drawn 2D in DraftSight and layed out with a height gauge on granite countertop. I have a drill press but no mill or lathe.
Here's a little bit of info:
Footprint: 48"x48"
Working area: 42"x36" 6" Z travel
Gantry Beam: 2 x 30 series 6060 t slot extrusion and a 6" wide piece of .375" plate
Z axis screw: 1/2 10 single start. Belt drive 1:1 from motor with GT2 5mm pitch 15mm wide timing belt on 22 tooth pulleys
Z axis LM: V groove bearings using eccentric and concentric bushings as well as hardened v rail mounted on precision ground 1018 plate. Moving rail, bearings stationary.
Y axis screw: 1/2 10 5 start acme
Y axis LM: 20mm supported rails, sbr20uu blocks
X axis screws (dual drive x): Not yet purchased
X (gantry) trucks: Steel Channel, or doubled up square tube.
X axis LM: Probably 20mm supported rails, not yet purchased.
Frame of welded steel, bearing rail mounting surface will be poured with surface plate epoxy.
I'll get some pictures of the process and progress together to give you all a better idea. Progress WILL be slow. Parts are expensive, life is busy. I'm sure you all know the order of priorities: family, work, house, projects, then MAYBE some hobby time.
