I am planning to retrofit Sieg SC4 8.5”x16” or Grizzly G0602 10”x22” mini lathe into CNC lathe.
I will use Gecko 540 with 280 oz/in stepper motors, 48B PSU, with pulley and belt and ball screws.
I wanted to hear your opinion on:
1) Which one is better to retrofit. If I buy SC4 I will be paying for cross slide powerfeed, but is it beneficial to me since the machine will be converted to CNC. On the other hand I’ve red that G0602 is Chinese machine, with a little bit lower quality. The spindle boring is around 1” on G0602 vs. 0.8” on SC4. I am a little bit disappointed that the opening is not a little bit more on SC4, but rather maintained the same diameter as on 7X lathes
2) Is there enough space to fit the ball nut, so the bed of the cross slide do not have to be end milled, like on some 7X models
3) Did anyone already converted one of those machines (I’ve seen threads for G0602 but not for SC4)
4) What brand name and pitch would you use for Z or X axis lead screws and ball nut
5) I believe that 280 oz/in motors will have enough torque and I will not have lost steps. What gear ratio is good to apply?
6) Does anyone has any drawings or 3D model
7) Is there anyone close to Los Angeles, California who has already done the retrofitting
8) Are there any other suggestions on other good quality lathes that are candidates for retrofitting
