I changed my 'internal' jaws to the 'external' jaw to hold the flywheel of a 2A042 when I tried to turn some .90 Stainless steel rod (two years later) I couldn't get it centered then I remembered the 'internal' jaws so I went to install them and that is where I ran into a small problem:
The jaws nor the chuck have any numbers on them, I lined the jaws up and then put them in order then labeled them 1,2,3 but looking around I keep hear/seeing people talk about matching jaw 1 to position 1 on the chuck, I have no position 1 and can not see that it makes a difference. The scroll moves around the chuck, jaw 1 goes in then 2 then 3, the scroll keeps the jaws at the same positions as I tighten the jaws hence the self centering concept.
I got the rod centered and cut .012 off with my 'new' (5 years old never been opened) indexable 1/2" tool, worked great!
