I have been using a chinese made 3040 small cnc router for a while and have decided I want to move to a bigger beast, and so have ordered a girzzly g0704 based on reading here.
I want to convert the machine to cnc using the stock screws for now (I want to make it easier on myself to do the conversion, and to keep the cost down as much as possible. I am not quite as concerned about super high tolerances in the things I am planning to mill). I am wondering what size steppers I need to direct drive the standard threads on this machine. I have done various searches and have found G0704.com etc, but I am confused as most the information I have found seems to pertain to specifying stepper size using ball scews.
Will I need to use belt drive, I understand ball screws require less force to turn them, or can I get direct drive to work without going crazy? I want to use direct drive if possible to simplify construction. Will the 570oz/in steppers mentioned on hoss's page work with the standard screw, or are they only recommended for ball screws?
Any help with motor selection would be greatly appreciated
