how do automatic tool changers work?

i have a 1997 dyna myte DM2900 mini mill with a 6 tool ATC..its a Bt30 spindle

seems pretty typical to me, its a air-actuated arm that pushes a carousel under the spindle..

im wondering the following things about how it works, mine needs some adjustment but im not sure how it should be adjusted:

-is the wedge-shaped "C" shape on the carousel supposed to put downward force on the tool when it hits the BT30 tool change ring? in other words, should it be slightly higher than the tool so that when the pneumatic arm pushes the carousel out under the spindle and into the tool, it also puts downard force on the tool via the wedge shape of the tool enagement "C". or is it just there to hold the tool in place?

-does the spindle air blast play a role in pushing the tool out? its 30 to 40psi i think, but the cross section its pushing on (the drawbar tunnel) is at most 3/4" diameter so thats only a few dozen pounds of extra help..unless im wrong and its at 100psi and works on the largest cross section of the BT30 which is around 1.75" maybe?

-does the z-axis pulling up while unclamping the drawbar, with the tool engaged in the carousel,b also supposed to help pop the tool out? or should the z axis have to do no work at all against the tool?

i guess one way of answering all the questions at once would be to say "when the drawbar unclamps, the tool should fall out. no other forces are involved in pulling or pushing it out. its all gravity. the tool changer just holds the tool, and by the time the z axis is pulling up, the tool is already free. the spindle air blast is for chip clearing only."
