I have this 2005 SL-10 lathe that we used for cutting non-metals like wood and plastic. The chuck was acting sluggish so I took it apart for a good once-thru cleaning. I knew it was full of wood dust and other garbage.
Beforehand, I could see on the outside of the chuck that it had some discoloration around the master jaws, where they were turning colors as if they were being heat-affected. After I got the chuck apart I found there was more discoloriation all around the body. I took some pictures which are uploaded as attachments. (The pics are from after the parts were washed)
Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I've never noticed this type of color change on any power chucks so I'm at a loss. Internally the chuck was in fine shape, yeah it needed to be cleaned and regreased, but I half expected it to not come apart at all because of the weird scorch marks.
After rebuilding it's working right again, by that I mean it cycles normally.
