x2 cnc as a shaper?

howdy.

i got an x2 with the ballscrew kit on it, dont remember what my steppers are but theyre the long can ones? real hi torque.

i cut steel, though the slideways arent quite up to it... got some 50mm granite,2'x1'. need another 1'x1' piece off my mate to do a surface plate and scrape the thing!

i digress.

ive been making a few cylinder heads, and im just contemplating using my parting tool, clamped to the head, and run a simple code to do the fins?

i want to get 25-30mm, at 2.5mm so an end mills out of the question.

just do a fast feed, 500 or so, to wherever, retract half mm, rapid to start, z down halfmm plus cut depth...probably only .25mm at first. rinse and repeat...

then skip over 1.5 + blade thickness for next fin

i seriously get scared doing 20mm+ plunges with a parting tool on the lathe!

plus the material i might be using is square... easier to use a "shaper" in my opinion.

yeah, if i had the quantity id buy an actual shaper!

any opinions?

heres one i made earlier :)

this was only 76mm, next time it will be either 101 round or 100 square... and 50mm deep, not 30. all i had on hand at the time!
