We make a part that requires a blank size of .625x1.5x5.50". We have used blanks up to 6" long and could technically use 3/4" thick material if we needed to. We require the supplier saw cut to blank dimensions.
Material needs to be 4140 or 4340 Annealed. We typically use CDA or cold drawn annealed. Could possibly use hot or decarb. The main issue here is the price. We have seen price for this material shoot over $4.00/lb from our supplier which is Alro. I am having a hard time swallowing that price.
Can anyone recommend other suppliers to check with that have plate or flats of these materials? NO, rounds will not work for this. However, due to all the problems buying the stuff, we are going to gear towards converting the part to run off a mill/turn so we can use bar.
Our typical order is about 200lbs.
I would also add that we may consider changing the alloy to a more popular alloy in flats. Still needs to stay a med carb, structural steel though.
