Need Help! 0ITD RS232 problem

I am trying to DNC interface two retrofit machine with a 0ITD control and they do not have the RS232 port. Can I buy the cable and plug it in to the JD36A plug behind the screen and change parameter #20? Or do I need Fanuc to come out and turn on an option?
