New Machine Build Any Advice for First Build

Hey there, this is my first post so im not sure if this is right place to post this but here goes anyways.

As the title states, im planning to build my first cnc machine. I recent started to get interested in it and i have been searching around for more info on it. I've basically got an understanding how everything works but im not sure where to go from there.

I want to design a desktop size cnc that could but wood and maybe some acrylic. I've read through the forum and i got a lot of awesome information from all of you guys. So do any of you guys have any advice for my first build? Should i go with a mobile base or a mobile gantry? What kind of stepper moter and driver would i get? Im on a budget so cheaper would be better but of course i still want quality parts so i could use them again if i want to build a new one in the future.
