Takisawa - No spindle brake, how to change chuck!?

I've got a takisawa ts-15 lathe. I just got the machine on Friday last week and am busy cleaning it up, and getting it ready for me. There was a 5C collet chuck (a nice one too) installed on the lathe, but I want to put a kitigawa 3 jaw power chuck on.

The lathe, as far as I can tell from the manuals, and from using the machine, has no brake for the spindle. It stops nicely using resistive braking - but when you need to hold the spindle in place (i.e. changing anything on the spindle) there isn't a brake!? wtf.

The manual makes no mention of it, there is no switch to turn it on, and there is nothing that looks like a brake installed on the machine.

At any rate, how do you guys deal with this situation? So far i've used an oil fileter wrench to grab the collet chuck, and built a cheater bar out of some sockets and a breaker bar handle to get the collet chuck taken off.

Now its time to tighten up the power chuck adapter plate, and I don't have an oil filter wrench big enough to hold it in place (imagine an 8" oil filter... unless you work at a mine, i bet this doesn't happen to you).

Does this seem odd to anyone? no brake? how to you hold your spindle still to torque your chucks on? That adapter plate needs specific torquing on it too.... argh!
