Folks,
Lots have been said and written about milling speed and feed calculations. Lots of online calculators to do just that. However!!!! All of them calculate feed (IPMs) for cutting e.g. when the endmill goes sideways. I have yet to see any calculation(s) regarding feed (IPMs) for plunging !?!?! In oorder to start cutting sideways I have to plunge the endmill first. Yes I know there are many ways to plunge (straight down, straight ramp, helical etc etc) but regardless of the plunge technique being used, plunging process will be considerably slower than sidecutting for pretty much all and any center cutting endmill.
So if anyone can enlighten me on what calculations/approximations/rules of thumb are out there to deduce plunging feed and how it relates to cutting feed (sidecutting). Say if my machine is capable of cutting aluminum with 0.5" endmill at 0.4" DOC full slot at 45 IPM it will be capable of straight plunging to 0.4" with XXX IPM ???? Where XXX is ???
