Newbie So many choices, I love it! (But I could use help, LOL.)

I am beginning work on a cnc machine based on a hybrid of X2 and SX2 parts. Consider it an SX2 for purposes of the moving mass of the table. I do have Chinese ballscrews to work with too. No steppers yet and I don't have a preference as to uni/bipolar or number of leads but I am still working through the materials on how they actually work.

I am waffling between getting a G540 and "Being done with it" or taking the road less traveled and rolling my own driver.

So... what's the best bet at the moment?

The new TB6564 board looks promising.... but I am a bit confused about the versions. Lucas has 2, and I get that there's one "Optimal" version and a second, more compact and possibly "less elegant" version. What about the Massmind one, it's yet a third design right? I'm not sure I get the benefit and/or differences between that and the other two.

Overall... if I get something solid like one of the TB6564 kits (x3) I'd have something just as robust and reliable as the G540..... or at least in the ballpark if I do a decent job of assembly? It also can drive pretty much any motor that would be reasonable for a SX2 no matter what the lead count?

Am I missing something in the big picture that would make it a poor fit to what I want to do? Is there something that is a better fit that I should be looking at?

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Troy
