First off, I just wanted to say, congratulations for entering the Guinness Book of World Records with the amount of different tabs/folders you have on this website.... Wow.
Ok to the real question. I'm a younger buck that just received my certificate for Machining from a local trade school in my area. I can sell myself pretty well and am a clean cut guy that is ambitious and have done pretty well just visiting some shops around my town and talking to the owners. Now this is where it gets tricky. I went for an interview with a shop that I found out isn't really a shop but more or less a temp. agency that sends out jobs to our big head honcho company around here. They sounded pretty interested and said they would keep my resume and if they got any CNC/Machining work they would let me know right away. They offered me 15 dollars an hour with me not haggling a penny. I've talked to 2 smaller shop owners (one employs I believe around 25 guys the other employs around 50-60) who said they weren't hiring right at this moment but in the very near future they would get back to me when business picked up a little bit after the holidays. Both guys told me to call them if I received another job offer. Neither offered me a salary at the time, they just asked what the other guy offered me... and I said we haven't yet discussed it.
I've read on different sites that the median wage for my area (Elmira,NY) is 35k. I've heard different shops around here can start from 10 dollars.... to around I'd say 18, but I just am not sure exactly.
What should I do? Call the 2 guys back and say I landed a job for 15 dollars an hour (which isn't a lie just sort of stretching things) and ask for at least 30K? Also the smaller shop I would be most likely working on a manual Bridgeport and the larger shop I would most likely be working on a CNC. I'm curious to see what route also would hone my skills better for the future in salary.
Thank you very much for any advice and for reading.
