i am learning about the various designs available and wonder about this - one popular design uses mild steel angle rails with 4 hardened V bearings supporting tha Y gantry weight. i'm not sure if the angle gets shaped into a more true 45° edge or not to match the bearing groove. another uses cold rolled flat bar for a rail. it's gantry sets on 8 bearings.
1. will the angle steel wear quickly or does it soon get work hardened?
2. someone pointed out that only one V groove rail is needed to keep alignment, that the other could be flat and float. i don't see this idea used anywhere however.
3. what are the mfg specs on angle? i found .003 for flat bar.
