Newbie Z Limit Error

Hi All,

Got my first CNC machine a couple months ago. It's an older ShopSabre 4860. It came with WinCNC software I picked up VCarve Pro. I have successfully been able to carve a dozen projects so far but have much to learn. Today I programmed a couple projects and went to cut them and ran into an issue. With both projects as soon as I run the script the Z axis goes up to the top and hits the Z High Limit Switch which aborts the project. I have cycled the power, rebooted the PC, check material setup in VCarve, and I can't think of anything else to check. I have not changed any of the WINCNC setup files. Does anyone have any ideas for me to try?

Finding a job in Austin, Texas--Hobby to Self Employment--To being employed.

I have been self employed five years and it's not been much but held my life together. I started this hobby when I was 18, then it grew over 7 years, and I've been with my folks the whole time while pursuing my BSBA half time (low vision, cannot drive but i am fine with detail work). Now my BSBA is almost finished (low debt and it's almost done) and I am in Austin, TX this big tech city... I'm out of place since I'm not a millennial at heart but have been working from age 12 on and am one of 7 kids. In addition to producing the work I do all my own online marketing, and I could get a tech job--but I feel perhaps the manufacturing is the way to go...

I am experienced with operating small CNC routers, making designs on the computer with CAD (Blender, Inkscape, and just the basics), and CAM (Meshcam, Cambam, and notepad honestly). I understand basic electronics, programming, and mechanical workings of said machinery. I do NOT know how to operate VMCs, big routers, ATCs, multible offsets, vacuum tables, rotary axis, flood coolant, or more crazy things since I've never needed them for my work.
I can explain TIR, backlash, feed/speeds, chatter, and what not. I can fix things readily, read schematics, solder, explain realtime motion control, deal with customers, etc.. I enjoy learning, watching technical videos, and working with my hands--I don't like theory without practice.

I work with wood primarily and dabbled with non ferrous metals. My products weight a couple pounds but cost $300 to $750 a piece. I have several hundred happy customers ranging from John Doe to the US Pentagon. I've sold 120K or so gross, and 1% of my orders are returned.. I'm highly adept with sanding, finishing, and the overall fit/finish--as my father was a hardwood flooring contractor, and we'd work in very high end places.

The trouble is my volume is too low--I work maybe 30-40 hours a month, and net $50-$75 an hour. The product is highly specialized and the niche cannot be enlarged--I am working on new ideas but they're slow and I'll be married soon. I'm almost free from college and will have more time but feel consistent employment and working the weekends for myself/us is my best bet.

I have a portfolio, 50+ customer reviews, a ton of high quality photos, I'm good with people, and I admit--I am not "production ready" but I learn really fast, work hard, and am not a know it all...

Realistically speaking I see jobs from $12 (fastfood wage here) to $25 (that's pretty darn good to me) here in Austin. But I don't know Mastercam, XYZ brand big router, or whatever else. I have a student free pass on the software but there's too many packages to learn, etc.

Where do I start? What am I worth? I know those are vague questions--but I figure I'll see anyways.
I suppose I need to produce a solid resume, contact some signage shops, and see what happens.
I think I'm worth something here--but I don't have the confidence right now, and it's hard to say. I realize I'm speaking of myself with a couple words online--but perhaps that's enough to show where I'm at.

Have my machine kinda working haven’t figure out yet how to operate completely but kinda getting

So I have Mach3 setup and works well but I’m limited to 500 lines of gcode (demo version) would you guys buy full license for $175 and use it or would it be better to convert it to gbrl and just use the free software (universal gcode sender) ?

Or can I use current lpt setup on universal gcode sender?

I’ve had this machine for about 2 years and never got instructions and honestly don’t have much time to play around with it but I’m 100% invested on it now Wanna work on some plexiglass:)

How to Process 3D Engraved Wood Craft with MORN MT-L1390 CO2 Laser Engraver?

Our laser machine users often ask whether mini laser engraving machine can process 3D engraving results, or how to use CO2 laser engraving machine to process 3D engraved wood crafts? The former answer of course is YES. And please find answer of the second question from the following parts.
MT-L1390 is a powerful member of our CO2 laser engraving machine family and it can engrave or cut a wide range of non-metal materials with positive feedback from our customers. Here we’d like to elaborate 3 key points of engraving wood craft with this machine.

1. Image Selection

The first condition to achieve a 3D engraved wood craft is to choose a grey-scale image, which is decided by the work principle of CO2 laser engraver for wood. In other words, the machine will engrave effectively on the black areas of the image, while the white part won’t be engraved by laser. A tip of image selection goes that obvious contrasts should exist among black, white and grey parts on the image in which the white part takes the smallest area.

2. Material Selection

Our repetitive tests showed that common glued wood or MDF is not the best material for 3D laser engraving due to unsatisfying engraving results. But solid wood (hardwood) can be! Its structure is stable and has little saw dust during engraving process. Also it won’t get black even when being engraved for several times. You can choose sandalwood, maple, oak or poplar to practice 3D laser engraving.

3. Software Settings

a. “Direct Output” mode (equals to 3D engraving mode) should be checked in “Layer Parameters” table.
b. Big difference value between min engraving power and max engraving power should be set like 5%-70%.
c. Engraving speed: 500mm/s. Fast speed, high efficiency.
d. Engraving interval: 0.04.
e. Engraving times: you can set 3 times firstly, and then increase it depending on the engraving results.
f. Air blow: air pump should be used to blow away the dust caused from engraving process.

Pleased noted that general laser products only need to be engraved once, but to produce perfect 3D engraving result with CO2 wood laser engraver, several times of engraving process should be done according to the engraving result.
OK, now that you have known how to engrave 3D wood crafts with our MT-L1390 CO2 laser engraving/cutting machine, just try it by your laser machines or contact us for more information about this machine model.

Newbie TAIG vs Pocket NC

Hi,
Sorry if I'm asking a stupid question.
I'd like to start my own rapid prototyping/small parts business, and I was realy excited about Pocket NC 5 axis machine, but today I found that TAIG CNC mill and lathe and they just look way more professional.
Is it worth going for 5 axes in Pocket NC, which is, actually, an expensive hobby grade machine with very small working volume, or stay with 4 axes and buy TAIG?

I have had a CNC machine since February this year, only a Chinese one. I wanted to get a feel for the processes and the challenges of the CNC world and I have had tears before breakfast learning.
I have invested in VECTRIC V Carve and it is wonderful. I am hooked, so I will be looking at CNC machines to upgrade to.

Other than that for now thank you for allowing me access

Antifreeze

Now its getting colder here in the UK, its time to think about putting antifreeze in the cooler. Is there any benefit to using OAT antifreeze over normal Glycol ?
I recently had to remove all pipework as it was blocked with a black sludge, although water is changed frequently. Is there anything I can add to prevent this happening again ?
Thanks in advance for any help / thoughts

Is it possible to use a switch on the cnc table that makes the machine go to park?

And set zero?

I am planning on making a jogging keyboard with switches for all the axes, start, stop and if possible go to park and srt zero.
